Think big with the new Slugger by FEIN JMU404 M mag drill

FEIN Canada introduces the new JMU404 M mag drill.

Mississauga, December 2019. FEIN Canada introduces the new JMU404 M mag drill. The powerful 4-speed mag drill with forward/reverse rotation and Weldon 32 fitting can drill diameters up to 4-5/16 in (110 mm) with cutting depths of up to 4 in (100 mm). Ideal for heavy-duty drilling work as well as with large-scale welding applications, e.g. special machine engineering or steel foundation construction.

Product manager, Christian Kreb, emphasizes the power of the machine. “We developed the drill specially for users who work on large components. They need rugged tools that will provide the user with an outstanding drilling experience during operation. The drill is extremely powerful, is easy to use and can drill large diameter holes.” With four speeds, the JMU404 M can be used for all drilling applications: core drilling, twist drilling, tapping, countersinking and reaming. For countersinking and reaming, speed reduction is essential – here is where the tool assists the user: With the slowest speed setting, the drill uses the electronic speed reduction function to slow the drill bit to 60 revolutions per minute.

Plenty of power and a huge stroke

At the heart of the JMU404 M is the 1,700 W high-power motor that provides the tool’s impressive torque. The maximum force on the drill spindle is 250 Nm. The MT4 mount allows standard MT accessories to be used. The tool has a stroke range of 15¾ in (400 mm) which is the largest currently available on the market and has manual, three-stage adjustment. To ensure metalworkers can continue to use their existing cutters with the FEIN QuickIN or 3/4” Weldon fitting, FEIN has developed appropriate adaptors.

Thanks to the mechanical 4-speed gearbox, users can adapt the tool speed to the respective drilling application and even cut threads up to M36 – an important consideration for constructors who have to deal with heavy-duty applications”, says Christian Kreb: “Metalworkers working on enormous constructions sometimes need to cut correspondingly large threads up to M36. Not all of these threads can be formed on stationary machines. Afterwards, many components are powder-coated. Threads that have already been cut then have to be recut and this is a challenge, especially in the case of thread sizes up to M36 – only very few manufacturers produce tools that can do this. FEIN is now one of them.”

High magnetic holding force ensures stability and safety

The high magnetic holding force and huge stroke is intended to ensure the safety of the user and protect the tool. In addition to the magnet’s holding force of 5,171 lbs, the tool has an integrated torque support that shifts the tipping point of the tool further towards the rear resulting in an additional extra holding force of about 225 lbs. The convenient magnetic holding force display tells the user when the tool is reliably secured by the magnet: A permanent green light indicates full holding force, the tool is attached securely to the workpiece. If the holding force is impaired, the light will begin to flash. Before the user drills a hole, the tool measures the distance between the workpiece and the magnet. If the distance increases e.g. due to uneven surfaces like paint or scale layers where an air gap forms and reduces the magnetic holding force, that is indicated by the light on the tool. If the tool tilts or slips, a tilt sensor stops the tool within seconds – another FEIN safety feature.

To protect the machine and tool, developers at FEIN have also integrated a torque slip clutch which intervenes whenever the tool blocks. The slip clutch achieves this by disconnecting the drive side from the output side in the event of overload. The JMU404 M’s motor cable is protected by a special swivel-mounted protective hose which moves with the user, irrespective of whether the drill motor is moving in a downward or upward direction.

Made for tough use in industry and trades

The robust JMU404 M mag drill weighs 85 lbs (39 kg) and has an extremely durable design that guarantees good resistance to torsion. Additional reinforcement ribs on the metal gearbox housing minimize vibration and maximize smooth running of the drill bit. The controls are located centrally, are self-explanatory and very easy to operate. As with all FEIN products, users can also register the JMU404 M for the 3-year FEIN PLUS warranty.

Slugger by FEIN mag drill range - five performance classes

The demands that end users place on functionality, price and performance are sometimes just as varied as the applications that they have to cope with in their day-to-day work. FEIN has responded to this by offering five different performance classes: Mobile, Endurance, Compact, Universal and Automatic.

The Mobile performance class includes the KBH hand-held drill for flexible and hand-guided drilling. The Economical class offers mag drills that provide basic functionality and are in the lower price range. The Compact class offers tools that are optimized with respect to their size so that metalworkers can even use them in the girder web of a steel girder. Mag drills in the Automatic performance class have a fully automatic drill feed to ensure efficient working. The JMU404 M belongs to the Universal class which, thanks to its broad range of functions, can be used for a wide variety of applications and achieves hole diameters of up 4-5/16 in (110 mm). “There are two things that all tools in all performance classes have in common: outstanding quality and robust design, both of which are essential for the tough day-to-day work of a metalworker”, says product manager Christian Kreb.
